Mediterraneen Virtual Museum

In concrete terms, the basic idea of the projecvt is to set up a portal of leading meseums  situated in the mediterranean area.each meseum in conceived as à virtual gateway to the cultural heritage of the country of region to which it belongs.

The Museums will give users the chance to follow a great number of itineraries that provide a guide to heritage sites ( historic city centers, monumental zoness, archaeological sites, etc.)

Information on the meseums collections wille be organised in order to guide the user trough the historical and geographic context of the contry to whom yhe objects reder to. At the sime time, in accordance with the latest scientific museography criteria, historical and geographic information on the existing heritage of of a country will be the most effective way of contextualising and providing knowledge on mesueum collections.

In this way the largest, most complet and complex mediterranean virtual meseum will be set up.

It will allow users to construct thematic itineraries through the mediterranean area ( e.g. prehistoric trading of raw materials and goods; the routes of the Phoencians, Ulysses journeys, greek colonisation, the vestiges of Roman and arabic conquests, Hadrian's journeys, piracy routes, etc)

It will also be an opportunity to reunite objects taken from their original  location over time, overcoming existing political, administrative and spacial obstacles

Users may be professionals, teachers/pupils and tourists.

ACTION EXPECTED FOR ALL THE OBJECTIVE

I/ PUBLICITY AND COMMUNICATION

The portal with all his contents have to be spread through:

·         The same logotype for all the net work

·         The same plan of communication

·         A common methodology for the communication

Department of Antiquities Suggestion of a Project for the EUMEDS

GIS For Archaeological Purposes

The Possibility of Integrating the database of JADIS (Jordan Antiquities Database and Information system) into a Geographical Information System program and the establishment of standard procedures of coordination with development agencies are all steps that will shape the Future of the CRM(cultural resourses management) and JADIS programs.

Then Transporting the System into a GIS environment is a step which cannot be delayed. As Common cultural History between Countries in the region may serve as a stimulus for improving protection for Archaeological sites & Information sharing, it may also serve the needs of scholars & archaeologists.( even if its primary purpose will be that of cultural Heritage management).

Why JADIS ?

Over a period of 9 years, Jadis a pioneer project in the middle east, has proven to be an efficient and powerful tool for management of Archaeological sites. With over 10.000 sites with UTM and PG coordinates, periods, condition, threat and protection, Jadis forms a large solid base for building a GIS system and is already considered a stereotype by countries in the region planning to build their own systems.

GIS: The creation of a GIS/database management system including the JADIS database has always been a cornerstone of the project, but never implemented because of time and financial constraints. The diminishing cost and increasing user friendliness of several GIS software packages currently available makes this step one of the priorities in the future of JADIS A proposal for. the upgrade of JADIS to include a GIS, presented by the Centro Scavi per il Medio Oriente di Torino(Italy ) is currently under consideration by the Jordanian authorities sites under threat of destruction, following «step-by-step» the development of construction. The integration of a GIS is a step which will allow the monitoring of areas with projects and the expansion of agricultural areas across the country. The integration of JADIS with a GIS system will be a powerful tool for the immediate identification of possible critical areas needing intervention, as well as for planning future rescue activities and setting up priorities of heritage conservation and preservation. As for the necessary base layers (topographic maps, soils, geology, legal informaion, etc.)a consortium could be created, joining the work presently conducted by the Geographic Center, the Natural Resources Authority, and the Land and Survey Department, so to avoid the duplication of work and the integration of database information in a single product. The development of the system in cooperation with other agencies will also serve as a vehicle to bring those agencies into a common approach to heritage conservation and management. Besides this important objective, a GIS could also be used to manage the different archival sources of information for each site: photographs, maps, plans, and be a valid research tool for students and scholars for their studies on the development of human settlement in the country.

Multimedia Access to cultural Heritage & Tourism.

JADIS program has the potential to be developed & expanded (the sky is the limit) maps

can be added, photos, Top plans, Video clips as well statistic informations such as number of

visitors to each site, accomodations …etc.

If linked with Internet & gets its own web page JADIS would be the most efficient promotional tool for Jordan which in turn inhances Tourism.

This could be supported by displaying JADIS on Arch. sites, in Hotels, resthouses & Airports.
